İçi boşaltılan ve yanlış yerde kullanılan kavramlardan ikisi cihat ve şehitliktir. Bunlar kutsal ve insani kavramlardır.
Cihat, İslam ülkesini ve Müslümanları her türlü tehlike ve saldırılara karşı savunma ve bu konuda gerektiğinde savaşmaktır. Yöntem olarak kalp, dil, el ve silah gibi çeşitli araçlarla yapılabilmektedir.
Kin ve nefrete yol açan savaşı bir cihat vasıtası olarak düşünmek mümkün değildir. Müslümanlara silahlı saldırıda bulunmayan gayri müslimlere karşı öncelikle yapılması gereken şey onlarla savaşmak değil barışçı davet yollarına başvurmaktır.
Günümüz şartları içinde takip edilmesi gereken cihad yöntemleri ekonomi, kültür ve mecbur kalınırsa silahlı savaş olarak değerlendirilir.

Aynı kökten iki terim vardır; düşmanla bilfiil savaşa ‘cihad’, nefisle savaşmaya ise ‘mücahede’ denir ve ikisi iç içe girer. Hz. Peygamber’in “Küçük cihaddan büyük cihada döndük” ifadesi dikkati çeker. Küçük cihad cephede düşmanla savaş, büyük cihad ise kişinin kendi nefsiyle savaşıdır.
Şu ifadeler Hz. Peygamber’in sözüdür: “Gerçek mücahid nefsiyle cihad edendir.” “Kuvvetli pehlivan güreşte başkasını yenen değildir. Asıl pehlivan, öfke sırasında kendine hakim olabilendir.” Mevlana, “Düşman saflarını bozan arslanı mühimseme, aslan odur ki nefsini mağlup eder” der.

Batılı kafa cihadı, bütün dünya müslüman oluncaya veya İslam hakimiyetine boyun eğinceye kadar müslüman olmayanlarla savaşmak olarak düşünür.
Halbuki Kur’an’ın, müslümanlara karşı düşmanlık beslemeyen gayri müslimlerle iyi ilişkiler kurma yönünde açık tavsiyeleri vardır. Nitekim tarih boyunca gayri müslimler İslam ülkelerinde can ve mal güvenliği içinde yaşadı, kendilerine milli ve dini kimliklerini koruma konusunda azami hoşgörü gösterildi.
Buna karşı Hıristiyan alemi asırlar boyunca papalığın da etkisiyle İslam dünyasıyla düşmanca ilişkiler içinde bulundu. Sicilya ve Endülüs’te insanlığın en ihtişamlı medeniyetlerinden biri kurulmuştu. Oradaki devleti ve milleti kökünden yok edecek ölçüde Müslüman kıyımı yapıldı. En son vahşet Bosna’da bütün dünyanın gözü önünde yaşandı.
