15 Mayıs 1919’da Yunan askeri İzmir’e girdiğinde bütün Türkiye kan ağladı.
3 yıl sonra 9 Eylül 1922’de aynı askerlerin denize dökülmesiyle de sevince boğuldu. İzmir’in kaderi Türkiye’nin kaderidir.
Gerçek kahramanlar felaket günlerinde ortaya çıkar. Bunlardan biri Şehit Fethi Bey’dir.
Süleyman Fethi Bey Birinci Dünya savaşında çeşitli cephelerde savaştı, nişanlar ve madalyalar kazandı. Aldığı yaralar sebebiyle ciddi bir rahatsızlık geçirdi. Uzun tedavilerle iyileşti. Ancak artık cephelerde savaşması mümkün değildi. İzmir Askerlik Şubesi Başkanlığı’na atandı.
15 Mayıs 1919 günü Yunan ordusu İzmir’i işgal ettiği sırada, Albay Fethi Bey Sarıkışla’daki bürosundaydı. İki Yunan subayı ve askerleri tarafından zorla odasından çıkarıldı, Pasaport mevkiine getirdi.
“ONLARI SEN TAKMADIN!”
Rıhtım boyunca başka esir Türk subayları tek sıra olarak yan yana dizilmişlerdi. Başlarında Efzun denilen özel giyimli Yunanlı erler vardı. Yunan savaş gemileri limandaydı. İşgalden sevinç duyan yerli Rumlar alanı doldurmuş, bayram havası yaşıyor, damlara, çatılara, balkonlara çıkmış, sevinç çığlıkları atıyorlardı.
Bir Yunan subayı, tek sıra dizilmiş olan Türk subaylarından her biri önünde duruyor, kollarını yana kaldırtıp indirterek “Zito Venizelos!” yani “Yaşasın Venizelos!” diye bağırmasını söylüyordu. Kollarını yana kaldırtıp indirtmek özellikle aşağılamak içindi. Bu arada evlerin balkonlarını ve alanı dolduranlar Rumlar, alay ederek kahkaha atıyordu.
Sıra Fethi Bey’e gelince, Yunan subayının dediğini yapmadı.
Subay emrini birkaç kez tekrarladı, ancak Fethi Bey onu duymamış gibi davrandı. Buna kızan subayın Fethi Bey’in omuzlarındaki albaylık apoletlerini sökmek istemesi üzerine, elini şiddetle iterek, “Onları sen takmadın ki sen sökesin!” diye bağırdı.
Bunun üzerine, Yunan subayının emriyle askerleri Fethi Bey’i süngülemeye başladı. Ağır yaralı Fethi Bey güçlükle Yunanlılar’ın elinden alınabildi ve İtalyan hastanesine yatırıldı. Orada ruhunu teslim etti.
İSTİKLAL FİDANI
Tam o günlerde bir başka olay yaşandı. Ülkemizin işgalden kurtulması, yeniden istiklalini kazanması için ilk adımlar atıldı.
Bir başka Albay, Mustafa Kemal, Ordu Müfettişi olarak görevlendirilmişti.
15 Mayıs günü yolculuk hazırlığı yapıldı. 16 Mayıs’ta yola çıkan Bandırma Vapuru 19 Mayıs’ta Samsun’a ulaştı.
15 Mayıs 1919’da can veren Fethi Bey’lerin, Hasan Tahsin’lerin şehit kanları, 19 Mayıs’ta Mustafa Kemal’in Samsun’a çıkmasıyla toprağa dikilen istiklal fidanını suladı. Bu fidan büyüdü büyüdü, dalları bütün Anadolu’yu kapladı. O iman ve heyecanla şahlanan Milletimizin verdiği mücadele ile son devletimiz kuruldu.
Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın başlangıcı olan bugünde, 19 Mayıs’ta Gazi’ye ve bütün şehitlerimize rahmet dilerim.
