19 Mayıs 1919’da da böyleydik. Bu tarih, bütün yorgunluğuna ve yoksulluğuna rağmen Anadolu halkının direnmesi ve şahlanışının başlangıcıdır. Bu halkın mayasını çok iyi tanıyan Mustafa Kemal ona güvenerek işe başladı.
Anadolu insanı kanaatkar ve fedakardır. Savaşlar, yoksulluklar ve sıkıntılar karşısında kolay kolay yıkılmaz. Milletimizin çoğunluğu olumlu davranışlara sahiptir. Hızlı hayat temposunun içinde bir kısmımız dağılır gibi olursak da, büyük kitle ve ana damar hep sağlamdır. Çeşitli felaket ve sarsıntılara rağmen ayakta ve güçlü kalabiliyorsak, bunu bu mayaya borçluyuz. İbrahim Tenekeci sorar:

Ve Namık Kemal’in Vatan Yahut Silistre isimli kitabından bir örnek sunar. Vatan Yahut Silistre yazıldığı yıllarda çok ilgi görmüştü. Lise edebiyat derslerinde ismi geçerse de yeterince üzerinde durulmaz.
Eserdeki karakterler arasında tarihi gerçekliği en çok bilinen, Abdullah Çavuş’tur ve asıl adı Mustafa Çavuş’tur. Manisa’nın Menemen kazasının Emiralem köyündendir. Silistre Savaşı’na katıldığı zaman yirmi, yirmi beş yaşlarında idi. Savaştan sonra hükümet kendisine maaş bağladı, fakat çalışabilecek durumda olduğu için devlete yük olmak istemedi ve bu maaşı kabul etmedi. Aradan tam elli beş yıl geçtikten sonra, 1909 yılı Ağustos ayında, Mustafa Çavuş, bir gün İstanbul’a çıkageldi ve hükümet kapısına dayandı. Yaşı seksene yaklaştığı için çalışacak hali kalmamıştı. Bu sebeple, hükümetin vaktiyle kabul etmediği yardımına artık ihtiyacı vardı. Hükümet dileğini yerine getirdi ve Mustafa Çavuş köyüne döndü.
