İsmini ortaokul sıralarında 1956-57 yıllarında coğrafya hocamızdan duymuştum. Bir yarıyıl tatili dönüşü, yaptığı Manisa gezisi izlenimlerini anlatırken Tarzan’dan uzun uzun bahsetmişti.
Manisa Tarzanı hakkında çeşitli bilgiler var. Ölümünden sonra (Mayıs 1963) efsaneleşmiştir. Ama şurası bir gerçek: Bu kişi Manisa’nın ağaçlandırılmasında önemli hizmet görmüştür.
Şimdi ben aradan çekilip sözü Manisalı yazar Kemal Y. Aren’in Çaybaşından Manisa’ya kitabında yazdıklarına bırakacağım:
Vali Murat Germen’in döneminde Manisa’da üzerinde kısacık bir şorttan başka giyecek bulunmayan, sakalı göbeğinde bir adam peyda olur. Adam Arapçadan başka dil bilmemektedir. Çarşı esnafı ona acır, bir köşede yatacak bir yer, karnını doyuracağı bir lokanta gösterirler. O da onlara Hatuniye Camii’nin şadırvanından su taşıyıverir. Çünkü o yıllar şehrin su şebekesi çok yetersizdir. Gerek bu davranışı, gerekse eline geçirdiği bir fidanı hemen bir yerlere dikmesi esnafın kalbini kazanmasına yetmiştir.
Vali Kırdar, ona Ahmet Bedevi adına bir nüfus kağıdı çıkartır ve itfaiyede kadroya aldırır. Ahmet Bedevi, halkın dilinde “Tarzan” adını almıştır. Zira o yıllarda “Ormanlar Kralı Tarzan” filmi herkesin dilindedir. Dış görünüşü ile ona benzediği için Ahmet Bedevi artık “Manisa Tarzanı” adıyla anılır. Yangınlarda en tehlikeli noktalarda hortum onun elindedir. Gözünü budaktan esirgemez. Yangın olmadığı zamanlarda ekibiyle ağaç dikme faaliyetlerinin içindedir. Yeni kurulan mahallelerin ağaçlandırılması onun mübarek ellerine bırakılmıştır. Hikmet-i Hüda diktiği her fidan tutar, büyür, dal budak salar, gölgeler veren ağaçlar olur. Bugün yeni Manisa’daki ağaçların hemen tamamı, Ulu Park, onun Allah tarafından bereketlendirilmiş ellerinin eseridir.
K. Aren şöyle devam eder:
“Lisede öğrenci iken edebiyat öğretmenim bana “Tarzan’la Röportaj” ödevi vermişti. O vesileyle bir yarım saat kadar Tarzan’la konuştuk. Verdiği cevaplardan aklımda kalan, Habeşistan taraflarından gelmiş, tam yerini söylemedi, belki o da unutmuştu; bir kadın meselesinden -kadının akrabaları onu ölümle tehdit etmişler- soluğu buralarda almış. Geldiği zaman üzerinde kimliğini belirten hiçbir şey yokmuş. Anlaşılıyordu ki Vali Lütfü Kırdar’ın verdiği Ahmet Bedevi adı takma bir isimdi.
Bu röportajın yapıldığı yıl 1952-1953 yılı olmalı, oldukça yaşlı görünüyordu. Yüzü kırış kırıştı. Ama hala daha yaz-kış sabahları havuza girer, yıkanırmış. Kışın bazen buzları kırarak yıkandığı olurmuş. “Tut, tut!” diye koluuzattı. Derisini yoklamamı istedi. Mübalağasız yarım veya bir santim kalınlığındaydı. Elbette o derinin altına soğuk da sıcak da işlemezdi.
Ağaca ve çiçeklere sevgisi Allah vergisi imiş. “Ağaçlar ve fidanlar sanki benimle konuşurlar!” demişti. “Elime aldığım fidanı acaba nereye diksem diye düşünürken içimden gelen bir ses, parmağımı da işaret çubuğu gibi kullanarak sanki, ‘Şuraya!’ der ve ben de onu oraya dikerim.” O zaman söylemişti: “Şimdiye kadar dikip de tutturamadığım hiçbir fidanım olmadı.” Gözlerinde bir çocuk safiyeti vardı. O zaman hissettim ki Tarzan zamanın bir evliyasıdır. Dergahı tabiat, mürşidi Allah, bu tarikatın tek dervişi kendisidir. Allah gani gani rahmet eylesin.”
