Yeşildere’den gelip Halkapınar’a dönünce hemen sağda bir taş yapı var. Bir süre DGM binasıydı. Yanında 1558. sokağın başında Halkapınar Şehitliği bulunur. Burada bir anıt yükselir. Üzerinde nefis bir sülüs hatla “Vatan ve Namus” yazar.
Önünden hep araçla geçtiğimiz için dikkatimizi çekmez. Ancak milli bayramlarda ve 9 Eylül törenlerinde ziyaret edince hatırlarız. Oysa burası Cumhuriyet yolunda önemli bir noktadır.
Yunan ordusu 15 Mayıs 1919’da İzmir’i işgal etti. Şehir üç buçuk yıla yakın acı çekti. Artık sona yaklaşılmıştı. 26 Ağustos 1922’de Büyük Taarruzla düşman ordusu dağıtıldı. 2 Eylül’de askerlerimiz Uşak’a girdi. Türk birlikleri İzmir’e doğru ilerledi. Nihayet Mustafa Kemal Belkahve’ye geldi, İzmir’i seyre daldı.

ŞEHİTLİK ŞERBETİ
Mersinli’yi geçtiler, bir Ruma ait un fabrikasından ateş edilmeye başlandı. Dört erimiz şehir oldu. Hemen oracıkta gömüldüler. Birlik yoluna devam etti ve Konak’a ulaştı. Sonra oraya bir şehitlik yapıldı, şehit erlerimizin isimleri mermer üzerine yazıldı:
Akşehirli Mehmet Çavuş, Antalyalı İbrahim Hakkı Çavuş, Nevşehirli Ahmet ve Seyit Ahmet, İzmirli Veyis (hastanede can verdi).
Cumhuriyet’e onlar ve benzerleri sayesinde kavuştuk.
ŞİİRİ YAZILDI
Zaferler, acılar, sevinçler edebiyatla, şiirle, anıtlarla hatırlanır. Halkapınar Şehitlerinin hatırasını Necmeddin Halil Onan (1902-1968) ebedileştirdi.
Necmeddin Halil, Darülfünun Edebiyat Fakültesine okuyordu. İstanbul’un işgali üzerine okul geçici olarak kapatılınca milli mücadeleye katılmak üzere Ankara‘ya geçti. Anadolu Ajansı Siyasi servisi’nde çalıştı. Muhtemelen Ordumuzun İzmir’ girişi sırasında veya hemen akabinde görevle oraya gitti. Henüz 20 yaşındaydı. Üzerleri yeni örtülmüş 4 şehidimiz için “Halkapınar” şiirini yazdı. İlk dizeleri şöyledir:
“İzmir’e ilk önce kavuşmak için / Ön safta koşanlar burda yatıyor”
O sıralarda veya daha sonra “Bir Yolcuya” şiirini yazacaktır. Halkapınar Şehitliği’nde, abidenin önünde mermere kazınmış halde bu duygu yüklü şiir yer alır. Aynı şiir daha sonra Çanakkale Şehitliğindeki bir yamaca da yazılmıştır.

Dur yolcu! Bilmeden gelip bastığın / Bu toprak, bir devrin battığı yerdir / Eğil de kulak ver, bu sessiz yığın / Bir vatan kalbinin attığı yerdir.
Bu ıssız, gölgesiz yolun sonunda / Gördüğün bir tümsek, Anadolu’nda / İstiklâl uğrunda, namus yolunda / Can veren Mehmed’in yattığı yerdir.
Bu tümsek, koparken büyük zelzele / Son vatan parçası geçerken ele / Mehmed’in düşmanı boğduğu sele / Mübarek kanını kattığı yerdir.
Düşün ki, haşr olan kan, kemik, etin / Yaptığı bu tümsek, amansız, çetin /
Bir harbin sonunda bütün milletin / Hürriyet zevkini tattığı yerdir.
