Oğuz Atay’ın “Bir Bilim Adamının Romanı Mustafa İnan” kitabından bugün de alıntılar yapmaya devam edeceğim. Kitapta aynı zamanda, bugün yüz akı öğretim kurumlarımızdan olan İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi (İTÜ)’nin gelişmesine dair ipuçları da vardır. Mustafa İnan (1911-1967) Zürih’te doktora yapıp geldikten sonra bu kuruma intisap etti. Birçok asistan yetiştirdi.
M. İnan idealistti. Kendini mesleğine ve ülkesine adadı. İstanbul şartlarında maddi bakımdan hep zorluklar yaşadı. Eşi de bir akademisyen olmasına rağmen, borçlanarak güçlükle bir daire sahibi olabildi. Oysa dışarıya iş yapsa daha fazla kazanabilirdi.
Yakınım olan Prof. Necati Tahralı 1970 yılında İTÜ’yü bitirince Konya Kara Yolları’nda 3 bin lira maaşla işe başlama teklifine rağmen Yıldız Teknik’te asistan oldu, maaşı 620 TL idi. O da idealistlerden idi, maddi sıkıntıyı göze aldı. Üniversite hocalarının maaşları T. Özal zamanında iyileşti. Şimdi Oğuz Atay’ın kitabından M.

GELENEĞE BAĞLILIK
Mustafa İnan Batı’ya karşı bir tavır içinde değildi. Ama o, iç dünyası ile Doğu’ya bağlıydı, bütünüyle bağlıydı. Lise yıllarında başlayan bir sevgiyle Divan edebiyatına, Divan edebiyatının büyük geleneğine hayrandı. Geleneklerine bağlıydı Mustafa İnan. Geleneksiz olunca hiçbir yere varılabileceğine inanmıyordu. Türk kültürünün de büyük bir gelenek içinde yerini alacağına inanıyordu. Matematiğin de, mühendisliğin de, kurulacak bir bilim geleneği içinde gerçek yerini alacağına inanıyordu. İthal malı bilim ile bilimsel ortamın yaratılamayacağına inanıyordu.
Konuya evrensel olarak eğildiği zaman bile ‘içten kalkınma mecburiyeti’ni gerekli görüyordu. Oysa Tanzimat’la birlikte varlığına inandığı ‘büyük gelenek’ önemli sarsıntılar geçirmeye başlamıştı.
Doğu’nun, bireye önem vermediği ileri sürülen ‘kapalı toplum’ anlayışı en ağır biçimlerde eleştiriliyordu. Her şeyin ve bu arada bilimin de, Batı’dan ithal edilmesi gerektiği sanılıyordu. Kültürün de, yaşama tarzının da bütünüyle değişmeye başladığı sanılıyordu. Ne var ki, belki her şeyin biraz görünüşü değişiyordu ama ithal malı bir gelenek kurma çabaları çoğu zaman hazin sonuçlar veriyordu.
MİLLETİNE ADANMAK
Mustafa, Anadolu’nun garip ve leyli meccani (devlet yatılısı) kaderinin içinde yetişmişti. Yüzyıllar boyunca ihmal edilmiş bu insanın kaderini yenmesi gerekiyordu; hem de emekleme çağını yaşayan teknik bilimlerde, birçok şeyi kendi başına bulup çıkarması gerekiyordu. Her yönde kendi başına genişleyip, kendi başına ilerlemeliydi.
Mustafa gibi, her şeyin aslını merak edenler için yol göstericiler de yok denecek kadar azdı. Bilimsel geleneğimiz yoktu.
Ayrıca geçim derdi vardı. Yemekhanelerin ve yatakhanelerin sıkıntılı dünyasında yaşamaktan usanmışlardı, yeni bir hayata yorgun başlıyorlardı. ‘Yurdu terk eden kabiliyetlerden’ biri olmamak, kendini ‘yurduna, ulusuna’ adayan bir kahraman olmak kolay değildi. Arkadaşlarının çoğu, okulu bitirmek ve hayata atılmak ve insan gibi yaşama şartlarına kavuşmaktan başka bir şey düşünemez olmuşlardı. Mustafa’da ise her şeye rağmen saf bir iyimserlik vardı. O milletine ve ülkesini seviyordu, parada pulda gözü yoktu. Kendini tamamen bilime adadı.
