Yeni nesiller pek bilmez, “Kızılderili” Amerika yerlilerine verilen isimdir.
Amerika’ya gelen Avrupalı göçmenlerle yerliler arasında 1622-1924 yılları arasında aralıklı olarak uzun savaşlar oldu.
Bu sırada Kızılderili tehciri gibi etnik temizlik hareketleri, Kızılderili katliamları yapıldı. Yeni gelen “beyaz adam”la yerliler arasındaki mücadeleler, pek çok Amerikan filmine konu teşkil etti. Bu filmler bizde de heyecanla seyredilirdi.
Kadim kültürlerin ortak noktaları vardır. Kızılderilierde, Orta Asya Türklerinde, Hindistan’da, Çin’de bunların örneklerine rastlanır.
Bizim kültürümüzde kötü kurt “nefs” adıyla anılır. Peki, nefs/nefis ne demektir?
Kısaca nefs, insanın yaradılışında var olan içgüdülerin, aşırı ihtirasların, zaafların, bencilliğin, kendini beğenmişliğin, kıskançlık ve çekememezliğin odaklandığı merkez demektir. Bir başka ifadeyle kişiliğimizin olumsuz yönüdür.
Hikayemizdeki 2 kurt, yani benliğimizdeki olumlu ve olumsuz yönler, hep mücadele halindedir.
İnsanın olgunlaşması ve mutluluğu, kötü kurdun (nefsin) yenilmesine, bir başka ifadeyle kontrol altında tutulmasına bağlıdır.
Bu içimizdeki bir tür savaştır.

Böyle bir savaş gereklidir.
Çünkü insanın olgunluğu, maddi ve beşeri içgüdülerin üzerine çıkıp, ruhi-manevi alana yükselmesiyle mümkündür. Bu mücadeleye “büyük savaş” denir.
Gerçekten insanın kendi nefsiyle savaşı, dışarıdaki düşmanla savaşmasından daha zordur.
Çünkü “nefs” içimizdedir, bizim bir parçamızdır. Bu savaştaki başarı nefsin ölmesi, yani etkisiz hale gelmesiyle mümkündür.
Nefsin ölmesi mecazi bir ifadedir, burada kastedilen ona hakim olabilmektir. Yabani atı ehlileştirmeye benzer. “Nefsin senin bineğindir, binebilirsen seni taşır; o senin üzerine binecek olursa seni öldürür.” denir. “Ölmeden evvel ölünüz” ifadesiyle kastedilen de budur.
Hadiste “Kuvvetli pehlivan güreşte başkasını yenen değildir.
Asıl pehlivan, öfke sırasında kendine hakim olabilendir” buyrulur.
